A small kit of the liaison and observation aircraft Piper L-4 from the workshop of the maker Mark I. The subtitle War Years points to the period when the machine served with combat units. The 1:144 scale makes it a real small thing, which can be built as an addition to a larger scene or as a piece in its own right for a collection.
The L-4 arose from the civil two-seat Piper Cub. A steel tube frame with fabric covering, a strut-braced high wing, a small four-cylinder engine and the ability to land in a meadow or on a field track: that was exactly what the army needed. The crew sat one behind the other and glazing overhead and at the sides gave the observer the view needed for directing artillery fire. Light machines of this kind got the nickname Grasshopper from the way they hopped during takeoff from rough ground. Without armament and without armor they relied on a low flying altitude and on agility.
The main work is on the glazing. It pays to fit it only after the fuselage has been painted and to use a glue for clear parts that does not fog the surfaces. The undercarriage struts are thin, so separate them with a sharp scalpel and preferably over the bench. A matte olive finish stands out if, once dry, you run a dry brush with a lighter tone lightly over it; that emphasizes the fabric covering between the ribs.
The model is supplied as a set of parts without a finish. Paints and glue are not sent with it.
