The kit from the Takom brand captures a complete gun turret of the kind carried by modern destroyers of the navy of the People's Republic of China, and that in the unusually large 1:35 scale. According to the information about the package it includes a metal barrel and photo-etched parts, so the finished model reads as robust even on its own, without the hull of a ship.
The single-barrel gun of 130 mm caliber makes up the main gun armament of the Type 052D and Type 055 destroyers. Its development followed on from the older twin-barrel systems, but the designers chose a single barrel and a new solution for loading and traversing the turret. Striking features are the angular shield with sloped faces, which reduces the radar signature, and the ability to fire conventional as well as guided ammunition against surface and land targets.
The turret is built as a small display piece in itself, so it pays to give time to straight seams on the shield: fill the joints and sand them smooth, otherwise every unevenness shows under the uniform naval gray. Degrease the metal barrel before gluing and use cyanoacrylate glue. The gray finish comes out best with a fine highlighting of the edges in a lighter shade and with a hint of corrosion where water runs down the deck.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints and glue are not in the package, unless stated otherwise.
