The package contains masking fillers, not plastic parts – what you are buying is an accessory to a model you already have under way. The fillers are inserted into the open landing gear bays so that the paint of the outer camouflage cannot get into them during spraying. The set is cut for the Zvezda 1:48 kit; the manufacturer also makes versions for other kits of the same aircraft, so choose according to whose kit you are building.
The Soviet I-16 is usually described as the first production monoplane with retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit. Its short, barrel-like fuselage with a radial engine earned it the nicknames Rata and Ishak. It fought in Spain, over Mongolia and in the first months of the war on the Eastern Front, where more modern types gradually replaced it. On this machine in particular the landing gear bays are among the places that show, because they are unusually roomy in a fairly thick wing.
On this aircraft the inside of the bays can be seen well and tends to be a different shade from the skin. Without a filler, overspray gets into it, and putting that right is unpleasant because a brush reaches into the corners badly. Insert the filler only once the interior shade is dry, align it with the outline of the skin and take it out as soon as the outer finish has set.
