About product

Guided missile destroyer DDG Atago in 1:450 scale from Hasegawa

The kit captures the Atago, a guided missile destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. For modern surface ships 1:450 is a space-saving format, and the finished model stays manageable for a cabinet even with a subject that large. Hasegawa is a Japanese manufacturer with a long tradition of ship models.

The real subject

The Atago is the lead ship of the class of guided missile destroyers of the same name. In its design it follows on from the older Kongo class, from which it differs most conspicuously in the widened stern with a hangar for a shipboard helicopter. The ship carries the Aegis combat system with fixed phased array radar antennas on the superstructure and vertical launch cells placed at the bow as well as at the stern. It entered service in 2007 and carries out the tasks of air and missile defense of a task group. The silhouette is distinguished by the tall angular superstructure and the clean surfaces designed with a reduced radar signature in mind.

Building and painting tips

First decide whether you will build the model on a stand or set it into a water surface, because that determines the sequence of painting the bottom of the hull. Spray the decks and the superstructures in shades separated by masking; on modern ships the contrast between the deck and the sides is pronounced. Thin elements such as the antennas, the radar grilles and the railings cannot be captured faithfully in plastic at this scale, so it is worth reaching for a separate photo-etched set. Keep the weathering restrained; on an actively maintained ship it is a matter of a subtle emphasis of the panels and of water run-off streaks rather than of heavy rust.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of modern surface subjects in the small scales.
  • Modelers building a collection of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
  • Anyone interested in ships with the Aegis combat system.
  • Builders with limited room in the cabinet.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The form of the hull is stated on the box and in the manufacturer's instructions. It affects the way the model is displayed as well as the painting sequence.

At this scale the railings, antennas and radar grilles are usually added with a separate photo-etched set, which has to be bought separately.

Yes, a smaller scale means fewer parts and a faster build. Just watch out for the small elements of the superstructure, which call for a steady hand and liquid cement.

The issue with that year in its designation is a separate product.
