The package contains individual ferns in a dry, browned version for dioramas and vignettes in 1:48 scale. The plants are separated from the sheet, shaped and planted into finished terrain. The manufacturer is the Czech company Model Scene, a specialist in diorama vegetation. It is not a kit but a scenery accessory. The name gives a range of 1:45 and 1:48.
Ferns die back in autumn and their fronds turn brown, droop and stay lying in the undergrowth through the winter until snow buries them or damp breaks them down. Dry fern therefore brings unambiguous information about the season into a scene: late autumn, winter or early spring, before the new shoots come up. It also suits permanently shaded and dry places where plants struggle – under dense coniferous growth, by rock outcrops or at the feet of walls. Dry greenery tends to be overlooked in dioramas, yet it is exactly what makes a scene specific in time.
Let the dry fronds fall downward – bend them more markedly than on the green version, so that they lie almost on the ground. Combine them with fallen leaves, bare twigs and dead grass, not with rich green summer vegetation; mixing seasons is the commonest mistake. Glue with cyanoacrylate into a pre-drilled hole and cover the base with a scatter or leaf litter. The coloring can be fine-tuned with a very thin brown or gray wash that unifies the growth with the terrain, but the dry look has to stay readable.
