Omask P-47 Bubbletop O-max set (1:48)

This is an accessory, not an airplane model. The O-max set from Omask holds precisely cut painting masks for the cockpit glazing and other clear areas, rounded out with foam (EVA) plugs for the landing gear bays. The masks allow the cockpit frames to be sprayed cleanly, while the foam plugs protect the inside of the bays from paint during airbrushing. The set is cut for the P-47 Bubbletop kit from Tamiya.

The real subject

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was an American heavy fighter of the Second World War. The version with the bubble canopy, the Bubbletop, gave the pilot an all-round view. A sturdy airframe and heavy armament made it a feared fighter and attack aircraft.

• The masks are stuck straight onto the glazing and follow the shape of the bubble canopy exactly.
• The framing of the cockpit is sprayed with no laborious masking by hand with tape.
• The foam plugs are fitted into the landing gear bays and keep paint from getting in.
• Once the paint is dry, the masks and the plugs come off easily.
