A pair of GBU-16 bombs with the Mk.83 body. The middle size of the laser family, that is a weapon noticeably heftier than an ordinary five hundred pounder, but not yet the two-thousand-pound giant.
Responsibility details are not available.
Between the small five-hundred-pound bomb and the two-thousand-pound colossus stands a middle class, represented by exactly this GBU-16. The guidance gear works the same way as on its smaller sister: the head looks for a reflected laser beam and the folding surfaces at the tail correct the trajectory. The difference is in the body, which here is the Mk.83 type of the one thousand pound weight class. The weapon suits places where a smaller charge is not enough and the largest would do more damage than is wanted.
The external store immediately grows hefty. Where a slender rod would hang under the wing, a robust cylinder with a pronounced tail is suddenly to be seen, and the difference is conspicuous above all when seen from the side. At the same time what the model tells changes: a machine with this armament is not aiming at a single vehicle but at something substantially bigger.
The two pieces in the package correspond to one symmetrical pair. For a fully loaded machine more than one package has to be reckoned with, but take care that with the heavier class of bombs the number of stations goes down. Triple racks, which are used for smaller loads, as a rule find no use here.
Cast material manages to draw out the seam between the head and the body and the small reinforcement of the surfaces, which with injected plastic is usually lost. The casting is washed and degreased before painting, otherwise the paint holds badly on the surface. Decals with lettering and bands are in the package as well. Worth attention is that at this weight the lifting lug tends to be markedly heftier than on lighter pieces, so if you suggest it on the model with thicker wire, the store immediately gains in credibility.
