The kit captures the Soviet Polikarpov I-16 fighter in the type 5 version in early configuration. It is one of the variants that differ from the later machines in details of the airframe and the equipment, so it goes well together with further boxes of the same line. The model is in 1:48 scale, that is, the size in which the I-16 looks compact and at the same time carries plenty of detail.
The I-16 was a revolutionary machine for its time. It first flew in 1933 and became the first series-produced monoplane of fighter purpose with a cantilever wing and retractable landing gear. It had a barrel-shaped fuselage of short proportions, a radial engine and a reputation as an aircraft that forgives only few mistakes but is agile. The type 5 of the middle of the 1930s was powered by the M-25 engine, a licensed version of an American radial engine. Machines of this generation made their name in the Spanish Civil War, where they were given the nicknames Mosca and Rata, and they also fought in the Far East and in the first months of the war on the Eastern Front, where they were already at a clear disadvantage against newer fighters.
With the I-16 what decides is a cowling that sits and precise alignment of the short fuselage, so try the parts dry first. The radial engine and the innards of the cockpit are clearly visible with an open cockpit, so it pays to paint them carefully and add a dark wash. Suit your choice of glue to the material of the parts, and for resin parts reach for cyanoacrylate glue. Soviet green and aluminum finishes look best when you spray them in fine coats and add restrained wear of the paint on the leading edges and around the cockpit.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
