A set of wheels in resin from the Czech manufacturer Eduard, intended for a model of the Douglas A-1H Skyraider in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit nor a model of the aircraft but a replacement part, with which the landing gear wheels in the basic kit are swapped out. Eduard makes several accessories for the same aircraft under very similar names, and the individual ranges are recognized by the exact designation of the set; this one belongs to the resin range.
Wheels in injection-molded plastic tend to be split into two halves with the seam running across the tread, that is across the most visible place on the whole part. A resin casting is in one piece, has a more sharply drawn pattern and a more cleanly made hub. The parts are cut off the casting block with a saw or a sharp cutter, the mating face is leveled, and before gluing the castings are washed in warm water with detergent, so that no release agent from the mold stays on them. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, as ordinary cement for plastic does not dissolve resin and the joint would not hold.
Wheels from this range are supplied in the color of the casting and nothing on them is pre-painted — allow for spraying them completely. The proven procedure is to paint the tire and the hub separately: first the whole part in the dark shade of the tire, then the tread and the sidewalls are masked and only the hub is oversprayed. The tire is to stay matte, whereas the hub follows the surrounding finish of the aircraft in shade and sheen, so that it does not look like a foreign piece in the wheel well. The wheels are fitted to the model only at the very end, after the airframe has been sprayed and varnished, because they are easily soiled or damaged under masking tape and during handling.
It is an accessory, not a kit. The basic model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
