Masks for the densely framed cockpit of the North American A-36 Apache dive bomber, 1:48 scale. The glazing is masked from both sides, and two sets of insignia masks and decals are enclosed. Accurate Miniatures plastic.
Responsibility details are not available.
The A-36 designation belonged to the attack version of the early Mustang with the Allison engine. It received dive brakes in both wing halves, bomb racks and a task that does not come naturally to a fighter: dropping a load out of a steep descent over Sicily and Italy. Pilots called it various things, while the official name Apache never really caught on with the units.
The cockpit of the early Mustang is among the most demanding surfaces a model in 1:48 scale can offer. It consists of the windscreen, two side hinged panels and an upper section with a view to the rear; the glass is divided into small flat panes and the bars between them are narrow. That kind of shape is the hardest of all to mask with tape, because every strip is a different length and the edges meet at sharp angles.
A double supply of insignia masks comes in useful on this machine: the star in a circle is applied to the airframe in several places and spraying a multi-color marking uses the masks up faster than simpler insignia do. Work from the lightest shade to the dark one and let every coat dry thoroughly. The sharp edge of the white area next to the blue circle is the first thing the eye notices on a finished model.
