About product

What the set offers

An accessory for the cockpit of the model of the Japanese A6M carrier fighter in 1:48 scale: the bulkhead behind the pilot together with the seat, in the version with the seat set high, that is in the top position. The part is made by 3D printing and belongs to the ASK line. The manufacturer recommends it for FineMolds kits.

Why change the bulkhead and the seat

On a fighter model the cockpit is visible through the clear canopy and the viewer's eye goes there first. The seat and the bulkhead behind it form the backdrop of the whole view into the cockpit, so they matter more than the small details hidden at the sides. A printed part can manage thin edges and lightening holes at a thickness that injection-molded plastic will not give at this scale. The position of the seat also changes the overall impression: a raised seat matches a pilot ready for takeoff, whereas a lower seat hides the figure deeper in the fuselage.

Building and painting tips

The printed parts are held on thin supports. Cut them off with a sharp blade a little away from the part, carefully sand the remains and watch out for the edges, which are very thin at this scale. Before painting, wash and degrease the part so that it is rid of the print resin residue, and let it dry completely. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue; cement for polystyrene will not hold on it. First remove the plastic that the part replaces in the cockpit and level the area, then try the part dry to see whether it fits. It pays to paint it before gluing it into the fuselage, while all the surfaces are still accessible.

Who it is for

For modelers who are building the A6M in 1:48 scale and want the cockpit finished properly. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

FineMolds kits are the recommended ones. Try the part dry before gluing and first remove the plastic it replaces.

Cyanoacrylate glue. Cement for polystyrene will not hold on printed resin, because it has no way of softening it.

Cut the print supports off with a sharp blade, sand the remains, wash and degrease the part and let it dry completely.

Before gluing it into the fuselage, while all the surfaces are accessible. Once it is glued into one fuselage half you can no longer reach them with a brush.
