About product

Mitsubishi A6M2 Type 21 1:48 - masks for the national insignia

A masking set from MH models in 1:48 scale aimed at the Japanese hinomaru national insignia for a model of the Mitsubishi A6M2 Type 21 carrier fighter. The contents are templates, not parts of the model. A round insignia is exactly the element where spraying pays off most: a decal with a circle tends to wrinkle on a curved wing and its edge usually shows, whereas a sprayed insignia is part of the finish and survives subsequent weathering.

The real subject

The A6M2 Type 21 was the carrier version of the Japanese fighter with folding wingtips, adapted to operation from aircraft carriers. It was powered by a radial Nakajima Sakae engine and the machine was famous for its range, rate of climb and agility, bought at the price of a very light structure. The hinomaru national insignia, that is a solid red disc, was carried on the wings of the type and in the later period with a white surround as well, which is sprayed in two steps.

How to use the masks

Finish the model in its base coat and let it cure. Seat the template in place and press it down all round the circle; on a curved leading surface press from the center toward the edge. Cover the surroundings. If the insignia carries a white surround, spray the white area first, remask it with a smaller template once dry and only then spray the red. Red covers badly over a dark base, so a thin intermediate coat of white under it pays off. Remove the mask shortly after it has dried and even the edges up with a fine brush if necessary. A final varnish evens out the sheen.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Japanese carrier fighters in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want to spray the national insignia rather than stick them on
  • Those who weather a model further and need durable markings
  • Anyone interested in accurate edges on circular insignia on a curved wing

This is a masking set, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the Japanese national insignia in the form of a solid red disc. In the later period it was often supplemented with a white surround.

Spray the white base first, remask it with a smaller template once dry and only then apply the red. The white also improves the coverage of the red.

It is not. The set contains masking templates only. An A6M2 kit in 1:48 scale and paints have to be bought separately.

Yes, better than a decal. The marking is part of the layer of paint, so it does not peel at the edges while you work with washes and pigments.

1:35 GAZ-AAA 1943 ( Miniart )

A Hauler 1:35 photo-etched set for the Soviet GAZ-AAA truck of 1943 is an accessory for a plastic kit you have already bought, not a model in its own right. It adds thin metal elements to the vehicle, where the thickness of plastic is apparent at first glance. The set is meant for the MiniArt kit.
