About product

Eduard 1:48 A6M3 Type 32, landing flaps from 3D printing

The set replaces the plastic landing flaps in a kit of the Mitsubishi A6M3 Type 32 fighter with a part produced by 3D printing. The difference shows mainly in the thickness and in the internal structure: printed resin carries sharp trailing edges and a well drawn interior of the flap bay, whereas injected plastic is for technological reasons always thicker than reality would suggest. It is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory for an already purchased model in 1:48 scale.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi A6M3 Type 32 is a version of the Japanese carrier fighter Zero with the Sakae 21 engine and with characteristically shortened square wingtips. It was by those that the Allies at first took the machine for a new type. Lowered landing flaps are among the details that markedly bring a model to life, because machines parked on the ground usually had them down. An exposed flap bay then shows part of the internal structure of the wing, which a kit normally renders only as suggested relief.

Building and painting tips

Cut the flaps off the print supports with a saw or a sharp scalpel and level the cut with wet sandpaper, so that no dust is raised. Wash the part in soapy water before painting. It is bonded with super glue, as ordinary cement for plastic will not join resin. An opening usually has to be cut in the wing, so try the fit dry first and only then cut. The interior of the bay and of the flaps is typically painted on Japanese machines in the bluish green interior color. A dark wash into the hollows and fine dry brushing of the edges will bring out the structure, and a final matte varnish unifies the surface.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the A6M3 Type 32 model in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want to build the aircraft with the flaps lowered
  • Those who are bothered by the thickness of the plastic flaps from a kit
  • More experienced builders, as the fitting calls for cutting and sanding

This is an accessory set, not a kit. The base model of the aircraft, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a replacement part for an already purchased A6M3 kit in 1:48 scale.

The Type 32 version is given. The Type 22 has a differently arranged wing and the manufacturer offers a separate flap set for it, so we recommend choosing according to the version of your model.

It is among the more complex accessories. An opening usually has to be cut in the wing and the parts cut off the print supports, so it suits more experienced modelers.

Bond with super glue. Wash the part before painting and spray it with a primer, and only then apply the paint.
