Control surface and flap masks for the Mitsubishi A7M1 Reppu in 1:48 scale. The sprayed shadow creates the impression that the moving surfaces are separate and slightly deflected.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of masks for an optical illusion on the moving surfaces. These are not canopy masks, nor parts that could actually be deflected: the surfaces stay where the kit maker molded them. A fine shadow is sprayed through the mask along the dividing gap and the eye then reads an aileron or a rudder as a separate part.
How the shadow works
The control surfaces of real aircraft never sit exactly flush with the fixed surface. A narrow shadow and a slight shift in shade arise along the hinge line. A molded gap cannot do that, because it is the same depth along its whole length and almost disappears once the camouflage is sprayed. The mask defines exactly the area where the shadow is to lie.
Spraying tips
Use heavily thinned paint a few tones darker than the camouflage and lay it on in several light passes, not all at once. The aim is a soft transition, not a black line. Hold the airbrush slightly at an angle to the mask so that it does not blow under the edge. The effect can be combined with bringing out the engraved lines, but then do not overdo the highlighting.
The A7M1 Reppu was a prototype Mitsubishi carrier fighter meant to replace the A6M type. The first machines were powered by the Nakajima Homare engine, whose output stayed below expectations, and the type did not reach production in larger numbers by the end of the war.
