About product

AF-2 Guardian Fire Bomber 1:48 (Special Hobby)

This kit in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Special Hobby covers the Grumman AF-2 Guardian in the aerial firefighter version. It is a stand-alone model of the aircraft meant to be glued together and painted.

An out-of-the-ordinary choice for a display case

The Guardian is a machine you do not soon meet at modeling shows, and in a civil firefighting paint scheme doubly so. Anyone whose case is full of fighters will get a markedly different silhouette and coloring with this model.

The real subject

The Grumman AF Guardian was a carrier-based anti-submarine aircraft of the US Navy of the late 1940s. It was marked by an exceptionally hefty fuselage with a single radial piston engine, and it was among the largest single-engine piston machines the US Navy ever operated. It was used in pairs, with one machine carrying the search equipment and the other the weapons. After withdrawal from naval service, surplus airframes went to civil operators and were converted into aerial firefighters, that is aircraft that drop fire retardant on forest fires. The roomy bomb bay came in handy for that role, and the machines flew in it for a good many years after the end of their military careers.

Building and painting tips

Limited-run models usually have finer surface engraving but call for more dry-fitting than mainstream kits. Before you start gluing, try the fit of the fuselage halves and the seating of the wing dry and reckon on filling and sanding the joints.

Firefighting paint schemes tend to be markedly colorful, which makes demands on the base: lay on a primer, then a white base under the bright colors and only then the target shade. Spray gloss varnish before the decals so that no white veil forms under them, settle the decals with a softener and finally seal them with varnish at the chosen level of sheen. The weathering on a firefighting machine concentrates on exhaust staining and a dirty belly, not on combat damage.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers with experience of limited-run kits
  • Collectors of civil and rescue aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • Those interested in American carrier aircraft of the postwar period
  • Those who want an unconventional colorful machine for a display case

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is an aircraft converted for fighting forest fires, that is for dropping fire retardant. It is not a bomber in the combat sense.

Rather not. Limited-run kits usually call for more dry-fitting, filling and sanding than ordinary mass-produced models.

Check the number of color schemes on the packaging or in the manufacturer's instructions.

Yes, it was among the largest single-engine piston aircraft the US Navy operated. The model shows that well in 1:48 scale.
