The set by the Czech manufacturer CMK contains a figure of a German soldier serving in North Africa during the Second World War and with him a camel in the matching scale. The scene is conceived as a genre piece: the soldier is trying to move the animal, which is in no mood to cooperate. It is precisely such scenes that give airfield and desert dioramas a human dimension and break up the monotony of the equipment on its own. The 1:48 scale corresponds to the most widespread scale of aircraft models, so the set combines easily with the aircraft deployed over North Africa.
German units operated in North Africa from 1941 to 1943 and their kit adapted to the desert environment: a lighter tropical uniform in sand shades, a tropical helmet or a field cap, short trousers and high boots. The one-humped camel was a common part of the landscape and of local transport in the area, so the soldiers met it every day. The set therefore does not capture a combat situation but an everyday moment behind the lines.
Before painting, clean the figure and the animal carefully and sand the mold parting lines down; use respiratory protection while sanding. Then apply a thin coat of base color. Let the uniform in sand shades come out by means of a darker tone into the folds and a fine lightening on the raised surfaces, otherwise it comes across as flat. The camel's coat is rewarding for drybrushing: a base tone, a darker wash and then a light pass with a lighter shade over the raised areas. Dust on the boots and on the bottom of the trouser legs will tie the scene in with the base of the diorama.
