1:48 Aichi D3A1 Val Control Surfaces is a set of self-adhesive Dead Design masking templates for spraying the control surfaces of a model. It is not a kit and not a decal sheet but an accessory for painting.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of accurately cut self-adhesive masks for the control surfaces of a model of the Japanese Aichi D3A1 carrier dive bomber in 1:48 scale. The masks are applied to an already painted surface and a slightly different shade is sprayed over them, bringing out the ribbed fabric structure of the ailerons, the elevator and the rudder. The result is a three-dimensional impression of the surface that is hard to achieve freehand with a brush.
The Aichi D3A was a carrier dive bomber of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service with a radial engine, fixed landing gear in streamlined fairings and a strikingly elliptical wing. The D3A1 version is the first production variant of the type. On machines of this generation the control surfaces had a metal frame covered with fabric, which showed on the surface as regular ribbing between the spars.
A decal lies on the surface as a separate layer and at a shallow viewing angle it gives itself away by a glossy edge or by silvering. With a mask the effect arises in the paint itself, the surface stays uniform and it will take subsequent weathering. Work on a dry, degreased finish, press the edge of the mask down along its whole length with a wooden stick, spray square on with thinly diluted paint and in several light coats. Lift the mask shortly after spraying, while the paint film is still flexible, and draw it off at a shallow angle, not straight up.
The package holds masking material only. The kit, paints and thinner are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
