Underwing pods are among the few accessories that change the overall impression of a model without touching its structure. This set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard brings the targeting pod of the LANTIRN system cast in resin in 1:48 scale. It is neither an aircraft model nor a kit. It is a separate accessory for a model you have already built or have under construction. Telling the Eduard ranges apart is simple: resin sets like this one are cast and solid, photo-etched sets are of flat brass sheet, the Zoom range is a narrowed selection of them, masks are self-adhesive templates and combined sets join several sets into one package.
LANTIRN is an American system for navigation and targeting at low altitude and at night, built around a pair of pods. The AN/AAQ-14 is the targeting one of them; it carries an infrared sensor and a laser rangefinder and designator, thanks to which the aircraft can illuminate guided munitions itself. The other pod of the system serves for navigation. The pods are hung on pylons under the fuselage or under the engine nacelles and on a model can be recognized by their long cylindrical shape with a rotating head at the end.
First wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water to remove the mold release agent. On pods the casting block is usually on the underside; cut it off with a fine saw and level the surface on abrasive paper laid on glass. Sand wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, not with cement for plastic, and a primer should be applied before painting. Paint the pod separately from the model and attach it only after the clear coat and the decals. The optical head is well rendered with gloss clear varnish or a tiny piece of clear film so that it looks like glass.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
