A small but striking add-on set from the Czech maker Eduard: an AN/ALQ-87 electronic countermeasures pod in 1:48 scale, cast in resin. It serves to complete the stores of a finished combat aircraft model and is not a kit in itself. Compared with the plastic part from a kit, resin offers sharper edges, more legible engraving and more faithfully rendered antenna covers.
The AN/ALQ-87 series of jamming pods followed on from the earlier American carried jammers and were used during the Vietnam War. The aircraft carried them on a centerline or underwing pylon, and their purpose was to make life harder for air defense radars. For modelers they are interesting precisely because they change the silhouette of the stores — a machine with a jammer looks different from the same type in a purely attack configuration, and photographs from operations often differ from aircraft to aircraft in this detail.
Before gluing, wash the part in warm water with dish soap, remove the casting block with a fine saw and level the surface with abrasive paper; protect your airways when sanding resin. It is glued with super glue, or with epoxy, which gives more time to set the position. Lay the base coat over a primer and then bring the surface to life with a fine wash in the engraving and a dry brush on the edges of the casings. The pod need not be needlessly dusty — it was new and well maintained equipment, so keep the weathering restrained. Test the position dry, so that the pod hangs parallel to the axis of the aircraft.
An add-on set, not an aircraft model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
