The Ba-20 was a Soviet light armored car built on the chassis of a production passenger car. It served mainly for reconnaissance, liaison and escorting columns, that is for tasks where mobility on the road counts rather than the strength of the armor. The armor shielded the crew against splinters and small-arms fire, and the armament was a 7.62 mm machine gun in a rotating turret. The vehicle came about in the second half of the 1930s and served into the first war years as well.
The model captures the late production configuration, which differs from the earlier vehicles in a conical turret with sloped walls. The slope of the walls raises the chance that a hit will glance off to the side without having to add thickness and weight. The shape of the turret is the most conspicuous identifying mark of the late vehicles, both in period photographs and on the finished model.
Free the parts of surplus material before gluing and sand the mating surfaces so that they meet without pressure. Dry-fit the bodywork and the turret first and only then glue them. Wash and degrease the model before painting. Lay the base green shade on in thin coats, so that the surface detail stays visible; a light dry brush will bring the edges to life and a dark wash the recesses. Finish the wheel arches and the underside of the bodywork with dust and deposits of mud, as a light car gets dirty quickly in soft terrain.
