1:48 Beer Delivery is a resin set of beer barrels that British fighters carried under their wings on the drop tank pylons during the Second World War.
Responsibility details are not available.
A small resin accessory set, not an aircraft model. It contains beer barrels to be hung under the wings of the Supermarine Spitfire fighter where drop tanks were normally carried. The castings have a crisp rendering of the hoops and the head of the barrel and in 1:48 scale they make a prominent recognition feature that everyone notices on the finished model. The set offers the barrel in a bare form as well as a barrel with an aerodynamic fairing.
In the summer of 1944 fresh beer was missing at the forward airfields in Normandy. British squadrons helped themselves with an improvisation: barrels were hung on the pylons under the wings of Spitfires in place of drop tanks and the beer was carried straight from England. A flight at greater altitude chilled the drink on the way. In time forms with an aerodynamic fairing were added as well, so that the barrels would not spoil the flying qualities so much. The story is among the best-loved of the period and in modeling it has become a rewarding subject.
The castings are separated from the casting blocks, rinsed free of mold release agent and fitted on the pylons of the model. Use super glue, as ordinary cement for plastic does not work with resin. The wood of the barrel stands out when you add a glaze over the base brown shade and bring out the joints between the staves lightly with a darker tone, while the hoops only need darkening to the shade of weathered metal.
