About product

Eduard photo-etched set for the Bell P-39Q in 1:48 scale

An add-on set of photo-etched parts for a model of the American Bell P-39Q Airacobra fighter in 1:48 scale. The Weekend designation in the name refers to the simplified edition of the base kit, which has no photo-etched parts in the box; the set is intended precisely for it and supplies what such a package lacks. Eduard is a Czech maker from Obrnice near Most. A model of the aircraft is not part of the package.

The real subject

The Bell P-39 Airacobra is an American single-engine fighter of the Second World War period with an unusual layout: the engine sits behind the pilot's cockpit and a drive shaft runs under the floor to the propeller. Thanks to that the aircraft has a nose wheel, that is a tricycle arrangement, which at the time was rare on fighters. The cockpit was entered through car-type doors at the side, not through a sliding canopy. The Q version is a late production standard with revised armament and is the most numerously built variant of the type.

Why photo-etched metal and how to work with it

The question every beginner asks about these sets is why a plastic part should be swapped for a metal one at all. The answer lies in thickness. An injection mold needs a certain minimum thickness of material, so a plastic bracket, placard or pedal comes out several times thicker in 1:48 scale than the subject would warrant. Photo-etched sheet does not have that thickness, and the part therefore looks right in a photograph. The price is a different gluing technique: metal does not hold on plastic with modeling cement, which works by softening the plastic. Superglue is used instead, applied with a pin in very small drops, because any excess goes white and ruins the surroundings. On larger parts a glue of thicker consistency has proved itself, as it gives a few seconds to position the part. Before painting, degrease the metal with alcohol and spray a primer for metal over it; without one the paint flakes off at every touch of the tweezers.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the P-39Q model in 1:48 scale from the simplified edition of the kit
  • modelers who want an interior with a realistic thickness of parts
  • anyone interested in American fighters of the Second World War
  • those who already have experience of superglue and tweezers

This is an add-on set, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package. Before buying, check that the set matches your own kit.

FAQ

It refers to the simplified edition of the base kit, which has no photo-etched parts in the box. The set is intended to fit it out.

It is not. This is a separate photo-etched set; you buy the P-39Q model separately.

Because of thickness. Injection-molded plastic cannot be molded as thin as the subject would warrant in 1:48 scale; photo-etched sheet does not have that problem.

Only on a degreased and primed surface. Use alcohol and a primer meant for metal, otherwise the paint flakes off.
