About product

The real subject

The Bentley BR.1 is a British nine-cylinder rotary from the time of the First World War. It was designed by W. O. Bentley, the man who shortly after the war founded the well known car company, and he started from the French rotary engines of the Clerget series. The main change was aluminum cylinders with steel liners: the lighter material carried the heat away better and the engine took a higher output, which with the BR.1 ran at around one hundred fifty horsepower. As with the other rotary engines, the whole engine turned with its cylinders and the propeller around a fixed crankshaft. The Royal Naval Air Service operated part of its Sopwith Camel fighters with it; later came the larger successor, the BR.2.

What the set offers

The set has a finished replacement engine in 1:48 for building an aircraft of the First World War. It comes into its own where the engine is visible once the model is finished, that is under an exposed cowling or behind the opening of a cowling ring.

Building and painting tips

Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and carefully sand the remnant down. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts; ordinary glue for polystyrene does not hold on other materials, while cyanoacrylate is reliable. In color, play the engine out on shades of metal: darker cylinders, a lighter crankcase. A dark wash between the fins and a light dry brush along their edges will draw out the shape that would otherwise be lost in 1:48. The manufacturer's instructions state the exact procedure.

Who it is for

For modelers of First World War aircraft in 1:48 to whom the engine out of the box seems too little worked out. The aircraft model, the paints and the glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
