About product

Bergetiger in 1:48 scale: a CMK conversion set

The set contains resin parts that turn a plastic kit of a heavy tank into a technical version without a combat function. It is not a kit of the vehicle: you need to buy the base model separately and the conversion replaces the part that decides its role.

The real subject

Bergetiger is the designation for a modification of the Tiger I chassis into a technical vehicle in which the combat armament was replaced by lifting equipment. Only a small number is documented and its exact purpose is still disputed among researchers: both a recovery and an engineer role are put forward. For a modeler what matters is that it differs from an ordinary tank in the superstructure above the hull, not in the running gear.

When the conversion pays off and when it does not

Recovery and technical vehicles are rare in collections, because they are hardly ever made as kits: a conversion is usually the only way. The reward is a vehicle that catches the eye at once among a row of combat machines, and on top of that a natural motif for a diorama, because equipment without a weapon almost always needs the context of a scene. On the other hand: compared with the Sturmtiger the change is proportionally smaller and concentrated in the upper part of the hull. Anyone who wants the largest possible visual difference for the least work will reach for a more extensive conversion; anyone who wants an unconventional subject has it here.

Working with resin and with the conversion

Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and cut the casting blocks off with a saw. Sand wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). On a technical vehicle it is worth spending time on the patina: recovery equipment used to be markedly dirtied with soil, so washes, pigments and muddy effects on the running gear do more for credibility than a perfect sheen of paint.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who collect technical and recovery vehicles
  • Diorama builders where the vehicle has a job within the scene
  • More experienced builders of military vehicles in 1:48 scale

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a conversion set for a plastic kit of the corresponding chassis, which has to be obtained separately.

The combat armament is replaced by lifting equipment. The running gear stays the same; what changes is the upper part of the vehicle.

Yes, technical vehicles work well in a scene with a repair or a recovery, where their role makes sense.

It calls for working with resin and cyanoacrylate glue and for fine-tuning the fit of the parts. It suits a modeler with some experience better.
