The D version closes the first chapter of the Messerschmitt, the one with the Junkers Jumo inverted V12. The original intention allowed for a stronger Daimler, but it was not available in time, so the machine received the older powerplant with an output of around 700 horsepower. By the moment war began the front-line units were already re-equipped with the following version and the Doras were moving to night fighting and to training. A few examples were sold abroad, among others to Switzerland and Hungary.
On this generation the canopy is sharply angular, assembled from flat panes in solid frames, and it hinges to the side. The transparent areas are small, the dividing elements many and in 1:48 the lines are as thin as a hair. A modeler who sets about masking with tape spends an easy two hours over the cockpit and the widths diverge anyway.
Working with the film is fast thanks to the shapes being set in advance, and above all it is repeatable. It is applied to a degreased surface, pressed down around the perimeter and left for the paint to dry. The inner shapes are not merely decorative: a frame sprayed in the cockpit shade from inside looks different through the glass from bare clear plastic, and it is precisely this that shows most on finished models of prewar machines.
