An injection-molded plastic kit of the German fighter Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 in 1:48 scale. It is released in the Weekend edition, which includes well-molded plastic with fine engraved detail and a sheet of waterslide decals with several marking options. Photo-etched parts and painting masks are not included in the Weekend edition.
The E version, nicknamed Emil, was the first truly mass-deployed variant of the Bf 109 and bore the brunt of the air fighting at the start of the Second World War. The E-4 sub-version flew during the Battle of Britain in 1940. It was powered by a Daimler-Benz DB 601 inverted-V engine with fuel injection, which let the aircraft perform abrupt negative-g maneuvers without the engine cutting out — an advantage over its carburetor-equipped British opponents at the time. The E-4 was distinguished by revised armament and a more angular cockpit canopy.
Finish the cockpit before joining the fuselage halves. The typical 1940 Emil finish combines gray upper-surface shades with a light underside and an elaborate mottled pattern on the fuselage — an airbrush and soft transitions suit this better than sharp edges. Paint the canopy framing carefully by hand if you do not have masks, or buy masks separately. Set decals on gloss varnish and seal with matte.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
