About product

Photo-etched set 1:48 Boeing B-17G, wooden floors and ammo boxes (Eduard)

This is an add-on photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard in 1:48 scale, intended for detailing the inside of the fuselage of the four-engined B-17G bomber. The basis is parts of thin etched metal that replace or complement the simplified plastic fittings of the kit, specifically the floor gratings and the boxes for machine gun ammunition in the fuselage area. The set by itself is not an aircraft model or a kit, but an accessory that is glued into a model built from plastic.

The real subject

The Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress was an American four-engined heavy bomber of the Second World War, used above all for daylight raids over Europe. The G version is the most numerous and its hallmark is the chin turret under the nose. On the real aircraft the inside of the fuselage was the crew's working space: walkway floors, the stowage of ammunition belts and the boxes of rounds for the defensive machine guns were part of the fittings that can be seen on a model through the open apertures and gun positions.

Building and painting tips

Separate the photo-etched parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, and never break them out with your fingers. Folds are more accurate in a photo-etch bender, or between two blades. Metal is not glued to plastic with modeling cement; super glue or a slow-setting epoxy is used. Degrease the parts before painting and lay down a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth metal. Wooden surfaces look convincing when a brown oil or a wash is glazed over a light ocher base and an irregular grain is allowed to emerge. The metal boxes, on the other hand, will take a darker shade and gentle wear on the edges with graphite or silver paint.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build the B-17G in 1:48 scale and want an open fuselage you can look into
  • Those who already have experience of gluing and painting photo-etched parts
  • Diorama builders where the inside of the aircraft is visible
  • Collectors who take a model up to competition level

This is an add-on set, not a model kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an add-on photo-etched set that is glued into an already built or part-built model of the B-17G in 1:48 scale. The model itself has to be obtained separately.

Modeling cement for plastic does not work on metal. Super glue is used, and on larger areas rather a slow-setting epoxy, which gives you time to align the part.

Yes, unless it is stated that this is a pre-colored version. Degrease the metal parts first and lay down a primer, otherwise the paint flakes off.

Working with photo-etch is more demanding than an ordinary plastic build. Without a sharp scalpel, tweezers and a steady hand the set cannot be handled well.
