A decal sheet from the manufacturer Xtradecal in 1:48 scale devoted to the Boulton Paul Defiant in three service versions: the day Mk.I, the night fighter NF.II and the air-sea rescue ASR.Mk.I. The sheet is a standalone accessory with markings for a finished painted model; the kit, the paints and the glue are not part of it.
The Defiant was a single-engined two-seat aircraft of unusual conception: all of its armament consisted of a powered gun turret with four machine guns behind the pilot's cockpit, and fixed forward-firing armament was absent. Day operations did not bear this conception out, and so the machines moved to night duties. The NF.II version received the more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine and an onboard radar; the ASR.Mk.I variant was adapted for search and rescue at sea and carried equipment dropped to crews on the water. Later machines also served for target towing. We keep the description factual and technical.
On the Defiant the markings often reach across the edge of the turret, the engraved panel lines or the heads of rivets. A flat decal does not follow such a surface and stays stretched over a hollow, which creates a shadow and in time a crack. The procedure has two phases: first a softener, which makes the film pliable, and once it is dry, a fine cut with the tip of a scalpel exactly along the axis of the engraved line. A second dose of softener then draws the film inside and the line stays legible even after matting.
This is a standalone decal sheet, that is an accessory for a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
