A 1:48 masking set for the glazing of the British Defiant turret fighter in both versions. The film carries shapes for the outer and the inner side and is meant for the Classic Airframes kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Boulton Paul Defiant was built on an idea that sounded convincing on paper: a fighter without a single forward-firing weapon, but with an electro-hydraulically operated turret behind the pilot and four machine guns in it. The gunner was to fire to the sides and upward while the pilot concentrated on flying. Over Dunkirk it worked for a short while, because German pilots took the silhouette for a Hurricane and attacked from behind, that is straight into the fire.
As soon as the trick got out, daylight losses rose sharply and the type disappeared from the day sky. It moved to night fighting, where the Mk II version with a stronger engine and airborne radar brought it a remarkable record during the winter raids on British cities. Later the machines served as target tugs and in air-sea rescue.
It is the turret that makes this cockpit an above-average amount of work. The glazing is cylindrically curved, wraps around the whole perimeter and runs into the folding fairings that dropped into the fuselage as the turret rotated. Masking such a structure with strips of tape means endless layering and a step arises somewhere anyway. Cut film lies on a cylindrical surface without a fold and the edge stays straight along the whole arc. The reward is a model on which the turret looks like a glazed structure with real frames, and not like a transparent dome with lines painted on it.
