A kit of the German Bücker Bü 131 trainer biplane in the A version. It is a small aircraft, so even in 1:48 scale the model stays slight and takes up little room on a shelf. Beside large fighters it is a welcome change of subject.
The Bü 131, nicknamed the Jungmann, first flew in the middle of the 1930s and became the basic trainer on which whole year-groups of pilots learned to fly. It is a two-seat biplane with the seats in tandem and with open cockpits. The A version was powered by an air-cooled inverted inline four-cylinder Hirth of about eighty horsepower. The aircraft was also built under license outside Germany and a number of machines still fly today.
On a biplane the seating of the upper wing decides the result. Glue the struts one at a time, supporting the model so that the wing holds itself, and keep checking the gap and the symmetry from the front and from above. Run the rigging wires between the wings only once everything has dried and been painted, otherwise you will pull the model apart on them. The open cockpits here let you see inside, so careful work on the seats, the belts and the instrument panel is worth the effort. Apply the paint in thin coats; a heavy build-up rounds off the leading edges of small parts.
The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and accessories are not included, unless stated otherwise.
