A scenic accessory for dioramas in 1:48 scale. The name is in the plural, so there is more than one piece. A chest is a universal object of a scene: it fills an empty corner of an interior, serves as a surface to set things on, as a seat for a figure and as a reason why someone in a diorama is standing just where they are. The accessory is not a kit of an aircraft or a vehicle — these are stand-alone objects of a scene, set into a finished diorama.
In the parlor of a country house, in a store, in the corner of a hangar, on the bed of a vehicle or on a heap of belongings carried out in front of a house. In a scene they work best in a group and in different positions: one closed under a window, another open and in disarray beside it. A regular arrangement looks tidy but takes the story away from a scene. When you stack the chests, bear in mind that they will grow visually — in 1:48 two pieces on top of each other are enough to dominate a whole corner.
Cut the parts off the casting block with a fine-toothed saw, sand the cuts back and wash them in lukewarm soapy water before painting. Ordinary plastic cement does not hold on resin parts — use cyanoacrylate glue, that is super glue. Lay down a thin primer and build the wood up in layers: a dark base, thin lighter strokes along the grain over it and finally a dark wash into the joints between the boards. Pick the fittings and locks out with a dry brush in a metallic shade, and dust the lower edges with a pigment to match the floor the chest stands on. If the chest is plainly meant to be in use, sand the corners back by a fraction of a millimeter — wear in the shape looks more believable than wear in the paint.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
