A concrete bench belongs among the elements that define a setting at once: a park, a bus stop, a station platform, the area in front of an apartment block or a barracks compound. Without them a free area of a diorama looks empty; with them it immediately makes sense where people move and where they stop.
The scale is the distinguishing detail. The set is made for 1:48, so it fits figures and vehicles in the same scale. The manufacturer also makes the same subject in further scales — for 1:35 or 1:72 choose the matching variant, otherwise the bench will be too large or too small in the scene.
In a town or suburban scene, by buildings, on a platform, in a park and in a military compound. A bench serves well as a support for a composition — a figure can be sat on it, luggage or a bicycle propped against it, and the scene thereby gains action. It also proves itself as a yardstick of scale: from a familiar object a viewer immediately judges the size of the surroundings.
Wash the part in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry, cut off any casting residue and sand the surface. Concrete is painted from a mid-gray base; only the variation of tones makes the surface alive — a lighter tinge on the exposed areas, darker streaking into the joints and corners. A thin wash will bring out the texture, and a dry brush will pick out the edges and the worn corners. If you want age, add small patches of moss and dust at ground level and let the wooden or concrete seats fade. A matte varnish at the end.
