This photo-etched set from Metallic Details is intended for finishing the waist gunners' compartment on a model of the four-engine Consolidated B-24 Liberator bomber in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory. The base kit is bought separately and the set replaces its simplified plastic parts with fine metal.
The waist gun positions on the Liberator can be seen through the large windows in the rear fuselage and they belong among the places where a model either stands out or falls short. Floor gratings, brackets, frames and mounts all come out far too thick in injection-molded plastic. In 1:48 scale photo-etched sheet comes close to the real thickness, so the grating stops looking like a solid block and the compartment gains depth. The difference shows above all once the interior is lit, or on a photograph of the finished model.
The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was a four-engine heavy bomber with twin tail surfaces and a slender high-aspect-ratio wing that gave it long range. It was built in large numbers and flown over Europe and in the Pacific. The waist gun positions in the rear part of the fuselage were part of its defensive armament together with the turrets.
Cut the photo-etched parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, or with nippers made for photo-etch. Clean up the remains of the tags carefully with a fine file or a sanding sponge, otherwise the part will not seat properly. Make the bends along the etched grooves, ideally in a photo-etch bender or between two razor blades. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue applied on the tip of a wire, so that the fine detail does not get flooded. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with primer; without it the paint rubs off the smooth brass during handling alone.
The set is an accessory for building a model, not a stand-alone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
