About product

A cheerful one and a sleepy one over the Mediterranean

This sheet offers markings for two Liberators of the 343rd Squadron from the 98th Bombardment Group. The first is the machine 42-40256, named after the cheerful dwarf, the second the aircraft 41-11761, which besides its fairy tale name carried a second nickname taken from a Native American vocabulary. The unit named its whole strength this way and a number of those names entered the history of long range raids over southern Europe.

Compared with later variants the D version carried a lighter defense, but it had a long range, thanks to which it could operate from African bases against targets hundreds of kilometers away. In the equipment of the American army it represented, at the time of the North African fighting, the most modern four engine bomber that could at once carry a decent load and reach places shorter ranged types could not.

The connection between the two machines on one sheet is interesting too: they belonged to the same unit, flew in the same period and their artwork came from the hand of the same person. On models built side by side a shared handwriting is therefore visible, which in a collection looks better than two randomly chosen subjects.

Advice for the build

The nicknames tend to be printed as one whole with the artwork, so a smooth area with no seams and no residue of sanding dust has to be prepared under them. If you are preparing a model with a worn finish, reckon that the markings have to look older than the surrounding area; you achieve that by going over them lightly with a very thin sand colored paint once the printing has been fixed. Finally it is useful to unify the whole surface with satin varnish, after which the edges of the printing merge with the paint. Inside the package there are printed markings; a plastic model and thinner do not belong with it.

FAQ

Crews changed during service and a new one often added its own to the original artwork. Sometimes it was a name on the other side of the nose, sometimes an addition under the existing drawing.

Above all in range. It could operate at long distances from remote bases, which in North Africa was decisive, because the targets lay far across the sea.

Once a decal is fixed, very thin paint in the shade of the surrounding area is drawn over it. The markings then do not look freshly sprayed and fit into the overall impression.

It is enough to look it over against the light and check whether the printing has cracked. With older examples it pays to go over the area with a thin coat of clear varnish, which binds the film together.
