About product

Curtiss H-75N in Thai service 1:48, a decal set from Art Scale

This Art Scale decal set in 1:48 scale brings markings for a model of the export version of the Curtiss H-75N fighter in the colors of the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) in the period from 1941 to 1944. The box holds decals only; the model and the paints are not included. Thai markings are among the least usual for this type, so the set makes sense for anyone who wants to build something other than a standard European or American scheme.

The real subject

The Curtiss Hawk 75 was a single-seat all-metal fighter with a radial engine that was sold to a number of countries in the 1930s. Alongside the better-known version with retractable landing gear there were also simplified export versions with fixed landing gear in wheel fairings, technically simpler and less demanding to maintain. The designation H-75N corresponds to the export batch delivered to Thailand. The type served for a number of years as a fighter and combat aircraft, and its finish changed over the course of that service, which is the key point for a decal set.

How to apply the decals

The surface has to be smooth and glossy, so coat the area with gloss varnish beforehand, otherwise a haze will appear under the film. Cut the motif out as close to the edge of the print as you can, soak it in warm water and let it rest until it releases from the backing paper. Set it down, blot the excess water away and apply a decal softener so that the decal pulls down into the engraved lines and over the ribbing. Varnish over it once it is fully dry and even the surface out at the end with a matte or semi-gloss varnish.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Hawk 75 in 1:48 scale
  • Anyone interested in less usual export schemes
  • Modelers who build several machines of one type side by side
  • Those who regularly work with softeners and sealing varnishes

The set is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
