The third sheet of decals in 1:48 for the Chipmunk T.10 trainer, this time predominantly in the markings of University Air Squadrons.
Responsibility details are not available.
The British tradition of University Air Squadrons is remarkable for having joined the academic world to the Royal Air Force. Students received real flying training on real machines, and the Chipmunk was for many years the aircraft on which that training took place. The sheet represents squadrons from Aberdeen, Oxford, Manchester, Bristol and Wales, each with its home airfield.
The most interesting entry is an aircraft of the station at Gatow from 1983. This airfield lay in the western sector of divided Berlin, and British Chipmunks flew from it over the city throughout the decades of the Cold War. Their role was officially a training one, but the position of the airfield gave them a field of view that was not to be had anywhere else.
The list names ten machines. Besides the University Air Squadrons there is an Army Air Corps aircraft from Middle Wallop from 1994, a Navy machine from Yeovilton from the 1960s and aircraft of No. 8 Air Experience Flight and of the Central Flying School. A time span from 1960 to the mid-1990s makes the sheet a cross-section of the type's entire British career.
University Air Squadrons used bold color bands on the fuselage and wing in their day, running the whole length of the model. Painting them is easier than placing long bands from a decal accurately, so it pays to think out in advance which parts will be sprayed and which will come from the sheet. Each subject has its own combination of letters, numbers and unit markings.
