About product

Wheels and masks for the Do 17Z and Do 215 in 1:48 scale (Aires)

The set replaces the plastic wheels from a kit with resin castings and adds masks for painting. The main advantage of a casting is that the tire has no parting seam that would have to be sanded away along with the tread; a casting mold also holds a sharper drawing of the tread and the sidewall. The masks then separate the tire from the rim, so that the boundary between them is clean after spraying and does not have to be finished with a brush. That the set covers both types follows from their relationship: the Do 215 is based in design on the Do 17Z and uses the same main wheels. The number of parts and the extent of the masks are given by the manufacturer on the packaging.

The real subject

The Dornier Do 17Z was a twin-engine bomber with a high wing, twin vertical tail surfaces and a glazed front fuselage in which the crew was concentrated. Compared with the earlier batches the Z version had a reworked, more deeply shaped nose and radial engines. The Do 215 was an export-oriented derivative of the same airframe with liquid-cooled engines; later, versions adapted for reconnaissance and for night operations with radar equipment came about as well. Both types belong to the end of the 1930s and the beginning of the 1940s.

Building and painting tips

Wash the castings in lukewarm water with dish soap, otherwise mold release agent residue will keep the paint from adhering. Cut the casting block off with a saw in the plane where the tire meets the ground and level the surface on sandpaper on glass, so that the model stands straight on both wheels. Sand wet and with respiratory protection. They are attached with cyanoacrylate glue. Spray the tire in a dark gray shade, and once it has dried, stick the mask on and spray the rim; remove the mask soon and at a sharp angle. Add dry dust with pigment on the contact surface and in the recesses of the rim; on aircraft operated from grass surfaces a suggestion of dried mud suits as well.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build the Do 17Z or the Do 215 in 1:48 scale.
  • Those who want wheels with no parting seam and with a sharp rim boundary.
  • Builders with experience of resin and cyanoacrylate glue.
  • Competition modelers, where the landing gear and how the model sits are judged too.

This is an accessory set, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is an accessory set of wheels for a kit in 1:48 scale. The model is not included in the package.

The Do 215 is based in design on the Do 17Z and uses identical main wheels, so one set covers both types.

They separate the tire from the rim during spraying, so that the boundary between them stays sharp and with no overrun.

Cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Cement for plastic will not join resin.
