A scenery material from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene for dioramas in 1:48 scale. The package contains two flat sheets of wooden shingles. It is not a finished roof and not a building kit, but a covering that you glue onto your own substrate yourself: onto a model of a cottage, onto a cardboard or polystyrene shell, or onto an outbuilding in an airfield scene. In 1:48 scale a roof is already large enough for every inaccurately laid course to show, yet detailed enough for fine work on aging.
A shingle is a split or sawn wooden covering that for centuries roofed cottages, barns, hay barns, sheds and belfries here. It is laid in rows from the bottom up with an overlap, so that the row above covers the joints of the row below. Unprotected wood turns gray in time, warps, individual pieces crack and fall out, and moss collects in the valleys.
The substrate has to be flat and firm. Lay from the bottom up following guide lines drawn in pencil and glue with PVA wood glue, which leaves time to align a row. Paint only once it is glued on. Mix two or three close shades of thinned acrylic paint or wood stain and apply them irregularly shingle by shingle, as a uniform coat looks artificial. A dry brush in light gray pulls out the edges, a dark wash draws out the joints, and a greenish hint in the valleys suggests moss. A few shingles can be lifted slightly or removed to reveal the boarding beneath them.
The material is supplied unpainted, for further work. The glue, the paints and the supporting structure are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
