A scenic accessory for dioramas in 1:48 scale. It represents a miniature of the Enigma cipher machine, that is a typical piece of desk equipment in a command post, in a staff room or at a radio workplace. The accessory is not a kit of an aircraft or a vehicle model — it is a stand-alone object of a scene, set into a finished diorama to fill out the setting and the sense of scale.
The Enigma was an electromechanical rotor cipher device. It consisted of a portable case with a keyboard, a panel of illuminated letters and a set of rotating rotors under a hinged lid. It is exactly this compact case shape that makes the Enigma an object a viewer recognizes at once in a diorama, even when the model is barely a few millimeters long. In a scene it suits anywhere you want to suggest a signals or staff workplace: on a desk beside papers, a telephone and a lamp, in the interior of a staff vehicle or in the corner of a hangar turned into an office.
Cut the casting off the casting block with a fine-toothed saw, sand the cut back and wash the part in lukewarm soapy water before painting, to rid it of any mold release residue. Ordinary plastic cement does not hold on resin parts — use cyanoacrylate glue. Lay down a thin coat of primer, spray or brush the surfaces and only then deal with the detail: a dark wash will run into the recesses of the keyboard and the frame, and a dry brush will bring out the edges of the case. Small objects in a diorama look better when they are a shade darker than their surroundings — a small object otherwise reads optically lighter.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
