Masking pieces for the landing gear openings of an F-100 Super Sabre model in 1:48 scale, the first supersonic fighter of the US Air Force.
Responsibility details are not available.
The masking pieces follow the shape of the bays into which the landing gear of this machine is stowed. They are meant to separate the inner shade from the surrounding surface, which on this type tends to be glossy and sensitive to repairs.
The North American F-100 opened the so-called Century series and became the first production machine of the US Air Force able to break the speed of sound in level flight. It was powered by a turbojet with an afterburner, and the wing got a marked sweep and a very thin profile. Early examples suffered from lateral instability on the approach, known as the dance at the threshold of the runway; the later enlargement of the tail surfaces and a longer wing eased the problem. In Vietnam the aircraft operated mainly in the attack role, and some of them served as fast airborne forward air controllers.
The bare metal finish that this type often wore is unforgiving of repairs, so it is worth having the boundaries done on the first attempt. Spray the inside of the openings and leave it to rest for at least overnight. Only then close the area off and move on to the polished surface, which is sensitive even to a fingerprint.
