F-104 Starfighter — turned pitot tube in 1:48 scale from MASTER. The metal probe replaces the plastic part, which breaks off easily on a finished model.
Responsibility details are not available.
A turned metal pitot tube for models of the F-104 Starfighter in 1:48 scale from the Polish company MASTER. It is a simple but striking detail accessory, not a kit of the aircraft. It replaces the plastic part, which tends to be too thick on the model and snaps when the model is handled.
The F-104 Starfighter was a single-engine supersonic aircraft with a strikingly slender fuselage and a short wing with sharp leading edges. A conspicuous feature of the front end is the long pressure probe projecting from the tip of the fuselage. On such a slender aircraft the probe makes up a substantial part of the overall length and it is one of the first details a viewer notices.
It is on a long, slender probe that the difference between plastic and metal shows most: a plastic casting warps as it is cut from the sprue and after gluing it almost always leans slightly to one side. Turned metal holds a straight axis and keeps it even after years in a display case. Cut the plastic probe off and add a hole in the tip of the fuselage drilled with a micro drill bit to the exact diameter of the pin; drill slowly and work up through several diameters so that the bit does not wander off the axis. Bond the metal part with thin super glue and check the axis from above and from the side before it sets. Before painting, degrease the metal with alcohol and spray it with metal primer — without it the paint will come off at the first touch. It is best to paint the probe separately and fit it only after the finished model has been unmasked.
This is an accessory for further detailing of the model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
