This item is not an aircraft kit but a resin accessory from Aires. It replaces the exhaust nozzle on a model of the Lockheed F-104C in 1:48 scale with a single accurate casting. The Starfighter is a slender single-engine aircraft with a very small wing, on which the rear fuselage and its nozzle form a conspicuous part of the silhouette.
The exhaust assembly is one of the places where injection-molded plastic runs into its limits. The petals of the nozzle are thin in reality, but a mold can only cast them to a certain thickness, so the edge looks coarse. The part also tends to be split, and once glued a seam remains in the middle of a visible surface. A resin casting offers a thin wall, a sharp edge and a deeper interior instead, with no need for filler. In 1:48 scale you can look into the nozzle, so the difference shows.
First wash the parts in warm water with detergent to free them of mold release agent. Cut the casting block off with a saw, level the face wet on sandpaper and protect your breathing while sanding resin. It is bonded with cyanoacrylate glue. Dry-fit the part before gluing: seating it in the rear fuselage often calls for taking a little material away from the inside. Painting: metallic shades over a smooth gloss base, heat staining built up in layers of thinned transparent colors, soot at the rim with a dark wash or pigment.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
