Quinta Studio 1:48 F-104S-ASA — 3D-printed color interior on decal paper (Hasegawa) covers the cockpit of the upgraded version of the Starfighter. It is a set in its own right, not a variant of the interior for the basic F-104S.

This set belongs to the Quinta Studio interior range: color printing with relief, laid on decal paper. It is applied like a decal but looks like painted photo-etch. What matters here is the ASA suffix in the designation. Quinta lists the interior for the basic F-104S and the interior for the ASA version as two different numbers, because the instrument fit of the upgraded machine is not identical. Anyone who buys the set for one version and builds the other will end up with instruments on the panel that do not belong there. So choose by the version your box holds, not by the type of aircraft.
The abbreviation ASA denotes the Italian upgrade program for the weapons system and avionics of the Starfighter. The work concerned above all the radar and the related equipment, and that was reflected in the layout of the cockpit as well. The cockpit remained single-seat and analog, with round dials and busy side panels, but the placement and type of some instruments changed against the earlier standard.
The surface has to be smooth, dark and glossy. A gloss coat under the decal is the step most often left out, and it is exactly the one whose absence brings on silvering: microscopic air bubbles stay between the matte surface and the decal film and the panel takes on a gray haze. So spray a dark base, let it dry, add a thin gloss coat and only then work with water and tweezers. Draw off excess water with the edge of a paper tissue rather than wiping across the surface. A decal softener has no place in this procedure: it attacks the printed resin.
