About product

MASTER 1:48 F-14A early version, nose tip and angle-of-attack probe

A detail accessory from the Polish manufacturer MASTER, which specializes in turned metal parts for plastic models. The set holds the nose tip and the angle-of-attack probe for F-14A Tomcat models in 1:48 scale in the early version. The manufacturer states that the tip is turned from aluminum and the angle-of-attack probe from brass. It is not an aircraft kit; these are replacement parts that you glue into a model of your own.

Why change the plastic part for metal

A plastic tip and probe out of a mold can never be thin enough: an injection mold needs draft, so the part comes out thicker than it should be, often warped, and it breaks off easily when the surrounding area is sanded. A turned metal part, by contrast, has a genuinely thin profile, a straight axis and strength: it survives handling of the model and looks like real metal, not like a thickened plastic dummy. The angle-of-attack probe is a sensor measuring the angle at which the wing meets the airflow; on the real aircraft it is an unobtrusive little sensor on the side of the nose, and it is exactly this kind of detail that decides the credibility of a model.

The real subject

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was an American carrier fighter with a swing wing: the wings swept automatically in flight according to speed, from fully forward for takeoff and carrier landing to swept back in supersonic flight. The early F-14A production batches differed from the later ones precisely in the arrangement of the nose: they had a pointed tip at the end of the radome, whereas later machines carried different equipment in that place. It is this early state that the set reproduces.

Fitting and painting

  • Cut off the plastic part and level the surface with a file.
  • Drill a hole in the remaining plastic to match the pin of the metal part.
  • Glue it in with super glue (cyanoacrylate); ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal.
  • Before painting, degrease the metal and cover it with a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface and will peel.
  • It is best to glue the parts on at the end of the build, so that they do not bend during handling.

Who the set is for

For modelers who build the F-14A in 1:48 scale and want a precise, sharp and durable nose instead of a thick plastic part. The set suits early Tomcat versions best; on some kits a small adjustment of the seat may be needed.

It is not an aircraft model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a set of replacement metal parts for an F-14A model in 1:48 scale. The aircraft kit itself is not included in the package and you have to have your own.

It is a sensor that on the real aircraft measures the angle at which the wing meets the airflow. On a model it is a small, very fine detail on the nose, whose plastic equivalent tends to be disproportionately thick and breaks off easily.

Bond them with super glue (cyanoacrylate) into a pre-drilled hole; cement for plastic does not hold on metal. Before painting, degrease the metal and cover it with a primer, otherwise the paint will not take.

The set is intended for early F-14A versions in 1:48 scale. Check the particular compatibility with your kit against the manufacturer's instructions; on some kits the seat may need a slight adjustment.
