An accessory to a kit in 1:48 scale. It holds pre-cut self-adhesive masks on a carrier tape that are laid onto the parts of the model and protect them while spraying. With this manufacturer the EXPERT designation states the scope of the set, not the experience required, and it means the most extensive of the versions offered.
The cockpit of a two-seat fighter is fairly large at this scale and its canopy has pronounced framing that cannot be overlooked in a display case. On top of that come further surfaces that are usually masked off before spraying, and on a model the size of the F-14 there are plenty of them. Taping that whole list by hand takes up a substantial part of the preparation, and one crooked strip of tape is enough to make the result uneven. A pre-cut mask holds its shape, so both sides of the cockpit look the same, which shows at once on such a symmetrical aircraft.
Decide in advance whether the canopy will be open or closed. An open one calls for a carefully sprayed inner frame as well, while with a closed one part of the work can be simplified. Never degrease the glazing with alcohol or aggressive cleaners, which can fog clear plastic; lukewarm soapy water is enough. Before spraying, run a blunt wooden stick around the whole edge of the mask. With gray naval schemes and their sharp transitions, spray thin coats so that the layer of paint does not build a noticeable step at the edge of the mask. Lift the masks shortly after the paint has dried, pulling them at an angle across the edge.
