About product

1:48 F-14B Tomcat - 3D-printed interior from Quinta Studio

The set belongs among accessories, not among kits. Quinta Studio prints raised color panels on a decal carrier which are transferred directly onto the cockpit parts from a plastic kit. The result is an interior with legible dials, labels and switches of a kind that would be very hard to paint by hand. The part is cut from the sheet, soaked in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slid off the paper into place. It has no adhesive layer of its own and is held by gloss clear coat.

The real subject

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was a two-seat carrier fighter of the US Navy with a variable-geometry wing. The F-14B version arose by re-engining the original machines with more powerful and more reliable engines, which removed the most keenly felt weakness of the first series. The crew consists of the pilot in the front cockpit and the weapon systems operator in the rear; the two stations are equipped quite differently, and that is exactly what makes building the Tomcat cockpit so interesting.

Usage tips

First coat the areas under the panels with gloss clear coat (Future or Klear, Tamiya X-22) and let them dry, or the element has nothing to hold on to; on articulated spots a drop of cyanoacrylate helps. Do not use a decal softener or a setting solution; their chemistry attacks the printed resin. A tandem cockpit means twice the work and two different sets of panels, since the operator's rear station has a different layout from the front one. So sort the elements out and label them according to the instructions before you start cutting. Work from the large panels to the small ones and check for each one in advance whether it will seat in its place. Tomcats are often built with the hoods of both cockpits hinged open, where it is worth doing the job properly. Light and a magnifier are practically a necessity here.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the F-14B in 1:48 scale
  • Those who want an elaborate tandem cockpit without hand painting the instruments
  • Builders of models with the canopies of both cockpits open
  • Those interested in the carrier aviation of the US Navy

FAQ

No, it is an accessory for the cockpit. The plastic F-14B kit has to be obtained separately.

Sets of this type are made for the whole interior of a two-seat aircraft. Check the exact make-up of the sheet against the instructions enclosed with the set.

Yes. The part is cut from the sheet, soaked in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slid off the backing paper into place. It has no adhesive layer of its own and is held by gloss clear coat; a decal softener and a setting solution are not used with it, as they would attack the printed resin.

3D interiors are drawn for the parts of a particular kit. Before buying, check which kit the set is intended for, so that the panels seat without modification.
