An add-on set, not an aircraft model. The package holds resin boarding steps for the American Grumman F-14D Tomcat carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. The extended steps on the side of the forward fuselage are a small but instantly readable sign of a machine standing on a deck or on an apron; they are difficult to mold in plastic, because they have to be thin and yet strong. Quickboost is a brand of resin accessories from the Czech firm Aires.
The F-14D was the last production version of the Tomcat carrier fighter with a variable-geometry wing. Compared with the earlier versions it was given new engines and upgraded avionics, and it served with the US Navy until the type was withdrawn. Boarding the cockpit took place up a built-in ladder and steps recessed into the side of the fuselage, which were folded back into the outline of the airframe before flight. A model with the steps closed looks different from a machine ready to be manned, which comes in handy especially when building a scene with figures.
The parts are small, so work over a surface with a raised rim, so that a casting does not get lost. Wash the castings in warm soapy water and cut the casting blocks off with a new blade or a fine saw. Cut the openings in the fuselage to match the parts carefully, in small steps and with continual dry-fitting. It is glued with super glue, ideally applied with the tip of a toothpick, so that the glue does not run over the surrounding area. Get the painting done before gluing it in and bring out the edge of the step with a dark line; the area around it tends to be dirty from boots, which can be suggested with a fine pigment.
The set is an accessory for a build, not a model in its own right. The parts are supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
