F-16A MLU SPACE, 1:48 decals from Eduard

This set from the SPACE range is intended for a model of the F-16A after the MLU program in 1:48 scale. The abbreviation MLU denotes the modernization of F-16A and F-16B airframes, which brought the aircraft new avionics and revised cockpit equipment. That is exactly why detailed finishing of the interior is worthwhile on this type: the difference from the original version shows mainly there. The SPACE range deals with it using color decals with a three-dimensional relief, which are lifted with tweezers from the moistened backing paper.

How relief decals work

The print is carried on a thicker backing and has a raised structure, so once settled it casts a shadow of its own. A model therefore gains the impression of a relief part without your having to bend photo-etch or glue small parts on. The price for that is more careful preparation of the base: the surface has to be smooth, clean and coated with gloss varnish, otherwise the decal will not settle and will silver.

Application step by step

• Clear the area under the decal of dust and grease and coat it with gloss varnish.
• Trim the decal close to the print and moisten only the backing paper underneath it with a sponge.
• Lift the part with tweezers, not with your fingers, and seat it in place.
• Do not use a softener. The manufacturer prohibits it on the SPACE range, as the chemicals attack the printed resin; fix the part with white PVA glue.
• Once dry, seal the area with a satin varnish so that the edge of the backing is not visible.
