Few commemorative pieces of artwork refer as deep into the past as this one. In 2019 the Royal Danish Air Force had one of its F-16AM machines painted, the airframe with the number E-191, to celebrate eight hundred years of the flag called the Dannebrog. According to legend the red and white banner fell from the sky during a battle in 1219, so the year 2019 closes exactly an eight-hundred-year period and the figure in the designation of the sheet is arithmetically consistent.
Denmark was one of the four European countries that introduced the F-16 in the very first round at the close of the 1970s. Single-seat examples received codes beginning with the letter E, two-seat ones with the letter T. The modernization to the AM standard brought a new cockpit, more accurate navigation and the ability to use modern guided munitions, so the machines served until the time when fifth-generation aircraft began to replace them.
The flag motif runs along the fuselage and the fin and reads as very contrasting against the standard two-tone gray. Before applying the decals it therefore pays to smooth the surface carefully; every unevenness under a large red area is visible on a finished model.
The finish was in service for only a short time and accompanied Nordic air days, where it became a rewarding target for cameras.
