F-35A Lightning II, 1:48, Tamiya is an injection-molded plastic kit of the fifth-generation stealth fighter — with internal weapon bays that can be opened, nine marking schemes, masks for the canopy and a pilot figure. The Czech Air Force is acquiring the same type as well.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the fifth-generation Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II fighter in 1:48 scale from the maker Tamiya, whose aircraft kits in this scale count as a benchmark of fit and of clean moldings. The box is exceptionally rich: the internal weapon bays can be built open or closed and have a well worked inside including the wiring, the canopy is interchangeable (open or closed), the flaps can be put up or down and the boarding ladder retracted or extended. A figure of a seated pilot with a helmet-mounted display is included, together with a five-part engine nozzle, a detailed cockpit and landing gear bays, masking stickers for the canopy and for the seams of the radar-absorbent coating, and armament: AIM-9X and AIM-120C missiles, GBU-12 and GBU-31 JDAM bombs. The model can be assembled in three loadout modes — stealth (everything inside), air-to-air and beast mode with armament on all the pylons. The decals offer nine schemes: the USA and eight other allied air forces.
The F-35 Lightning II is a single-engine fifth-generation multirole fighter built around a low radar signature (stealth). So that radar picks it up as poorly as possible, it has a smooth, clean surface without external pylons and carries its combat load inside the fuselage, in internal weapon bays. Only in situations where concealment no longer matters are weapons hung under the wings as well — and that is exactly the beast mode mentioned. The A version is the land-based one, with conventional take-off and landing and with an internal gun. Watch out for confusion: the F-35B manages a short take-off and a vertical landing (it has a lift fan behind the cockpit) and the F-35C is the carrier version with larger wings and an arrestor hook. The versions differ in shape as well, so it is necessary to know which one you are building. A current Czech theme: the Czech Republic signed a contract for 24 F-35A aircraft in January 2024, and the first machines are expected at the beginning of the 2030s.
The fit is typically Tamiya — glue with liquid cement for plastic. Finish and paint the interiors of the weapon bays and the gear bays before you close the fuselage; if you leave the weapon bays open, it pays to invest time in them, because they are visible. Apply a primer, spray the base gray with an airbrush and do the seams of the radar-absorbent coating with the masks enclosed — fine shading of the panels does most of the work on the F-35. Keep the patina discreet, as an overdone wash rather kills the model.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
